Whether or not to prorogue Parliament was a question that divided Canadians. Prime Minister Harper wanted time to come up with a budget and put our seemingly weak Government on hold for seven weeks, until the end of January 2009. Who needs the third world, banana republics, and palace coups when we have it all right here? Maybe a bit of military junta to spice things up.
It's a little hard to keep up with the news these days. Who ever knew Canadian Politics would be so riveting.
The Governor General's decision to prorogue only bought time for the Harper Conservative propaganda machine to paint Stéphane Dion black while the rest of us are in the midst of an economic and polar cap meltdown. Dion didn't have a chance against Harper's negative campaign and barrage of attack ads. So what if Dion has a French accent? Stéphane Dion is a brilliant, humble, reasonable man and would never stoop to Harper's level. Do you remember the Puffin poop ads? As Conservatives money, spent on TV and radio attack ads, was wasted on demeaning a good man, Liberals in the mean time opted for a new leader, Michael Ignatieff. Harper quickly did an about face and had to change his tune, acting like the Liberals are now his best friends. He sees the new Liberal leader as his only hope to save his sorry ass, and it wouldn't be wise for him to continue to try to change public opinion with attack ads and petitions if he wants to be friends. After all he did burn all his bridges. There is a very slim chance Harper will survive as PM, but Michael Ignatieff, the new federal Liberal leader, has said he will consider Harper's new budget before deciding on a confidence vote.
Do Canadians really want an insensitive, aloof, egotistic, self-important, pompous, smug bully for a PM? Who has no other plan but to attack and make the other guys look bad? Who has a low complexity personality, meaning someone who doesn't see the grey areas, and who is very rigid in his believes and obviously unable to work with others. 62% of Canadians didn't want Harper back as the leader. Harper regained his minority government by wasting our time once again with an election we didn't want or need thinking he would get more power and didn't. Now only after seven weeks in office we have his prorogation and propaganda being shoved in our faces. We certainly don't want another election nor a budget that doesn't address real issues hurting Canadians. Just gives us a democratic vote. Harper did make an amazing feat though, he united all the opposition parties.
As much as I like seeing Harper fight for his life, he is an arrogant bully and deserves his penance. I see this as all good though. The threat that Harper might be out on his butt has made him change his wise guy attitude and consider real economic issues facing Canada. No more power games from the Conservatives. For now anyway.
The Conservatives said there was no recession before the election and there was no deficit. Now they are saying we are in a recession and there is a deficit. Their website looked so unprofessional like someone's cousin did it. They had nothing on their website about Healthcare or any plans at all when I last wrote the Healthcare situation and wait times. Now finally, they posted a plan October 8th 2008.
The coalition said it would cancel cuts and restore funding to the Arts and Film Industry. An industry that supplies billions of dollars to the economy. If the coalition takes over, maybe we can have our National Portrait Gallery back in Ottawa. Embedded journalists will be free to report on the Military actions in Afghanistan and will no longer be controlled by Harper.
Here's the thing people are not talking about in this political and economic uproar, except for maybe Al Gore, David Sazuki, Stéphane Dion and a few others. Science is now indicating that we have to move to zero carbon emissions, now. If we don't stop the warming of the planet, now, sea levels will rise. Shocks to the earth such as droughts, fires, floods and pine beetles will arise as a result of climate change. We need to aggressively get ahead of these problems.
Unless we implement ground source heat pumps, solar paneling, stratospheric windmills, carbon capture and refrigerating the poles, we not only say good-bye to polar bears and ice caps but civilization as we know it never mind the economy. The Liberals, Micheal Ignatieff and Stéphane Dion are acutely aware of this and know that we must address these issues now or their will be terrible times for future generations.
Harper doesn't any have such vision and is only pleading for public opinion to save his position of power. No party trusts him and why should we? Get up off your knees Harper, don't beg us, Canadians ain't gonna be your fools no more.
